Picture of the Day No. 93 – 1911 Stone Harbor Automobile Ad: “TRY OUT YOUR CAR ON SEVEN MILE”!

No. 93

What are those guys at the South Jersey Realty Company up to now?  Check out this interesting advertisement placed by the Stone Harbor Automobile Club of Philadelphia.  Think of the fun that can be had? It’s all rather self-explanatory.

The year is 1911 and the Ocean Parkway leading from the mainland at Cape May Court House to the emerging Stone Harbor resort is now complete.  As the ad highlights, “TRY OUT YOUR CAR ON SEVEN MILE”!  Imagine the claim that is hereby being made in the caption under the image shown here – this automobile navigating on the beach traversed the seven miles from Townsend’s Inlet to Hereford Inlet in just 14 minutes and 26 seconds!  And remember, the beach is 270 feet wide at low tide, is a “pure, hard, sand formation” and is unencumbered the entire length of the island.  That’s quite an invitation!

So in order to help guide you to the Jersey Shore, the Stone Harbor Automobile Club in Philadelphia has laid out an official route from Philly to the Seven Mile Beach by offering upon request, free of charge, an illustrated map detailing the “best and shortest route”.

“Come one, come all!”
