Picture of the Day No. 18 – Fishing Pier

No. 18

Here is the 106th Street fishing pier known as the Bower Memorial Pier that was named in remembrance of an early member of the Borough Council by the name of Charles E. Bower. Shown in this first photograph you will see Marty Jacobsen’s Bait and Supply Store.

Judging from this next early 1940s photograph, this very popular fishing pier for both young and old ocean fishermen was built in 1915 and extended from the municipal pier.  Notice the iconic town water tower on 96th Street in the center of this image.  This pier along with the entire boardwalk were both destroyed during the Great Atlantic Storm of 1944.
